Steve Jobs -- the race for the ultimate article. The first candidates, there will be more.

First out of the gate was Time, arriving via special delivery on Saturday. People also came out early, coming in on Tuesday, instead of the usual Friday, confusing everyone. Impressively, import magazine from Germany, Der Spiegel flew over to join the pack of early arrivals. If only I could read German! The New Yorker has several articles, but its cover (coyly hiding behind the yellow overleaf) has stirred up a lot of controversy.

And you might miss it behind all the Steve Jobs hoopla, but the New Yorker does have an article on the Norton Juster's Phantom Tollbooth -- 50th anniversary! The Magus Bookstore may have Dick and Jane in Yiddish in the window, but where is the Phantom Tollbooth?

Recent issues covered solar - large or small, a British study on how to get young teenage girls interested in science, and as you can see, this current Sept-Oct issue focusses on schools.

Miller-McCune is the brainchild of Sara Miller-McCune (she who founded Sage Press 45 years ago). MM describes itself as "the most viable source of research-based news for solutions-driven individuals." Utne Reader gave it their Utne Independent Press Award for best science/techn coverage for 2009, and comments on 2010 LA Times review.

The questioner said, but my friend told me he was in it!

Excitement! Could it be? Had they been reborn?

A little research indicates that Shindig Quarterly #3 is about to hit the newsstands in the UK, and will shortly be wending its way across the pond to us! Rumor has it that it will arrive at the end of September, in time for the new school year.

If you need some Shindig action before then, Shindig now has a blog they call their hip little sister, Happening.

Port bills itself as The Magazine for Men. But I honestly don't see anything about it that makes it particularly for men. A photographic essay on a remote village in South Africa, words and photos on the young assassins of Columbia, Nicholson Baker on David Remnick, sculpture, good design items (shelves, cups, tables), an interesting article about 85 year old green building visionary Harry Gesner, Joana and Joseph model clothes, something by Martin Amis, and interview with Sylvia Whitman, the (young) woman now in charge of the Shakespeare & Company.

And then a few words from Hunter S Thompson.

"I'm a romantic junkie both to the love and adventure ethic -- cursed and burdened and stooped all my life from carrying the albatross of the "Romantic Sensibility" -- like Shelley and Keats and Lord Byron and Big Sam Coleridge and Keith Richards and Bob Dylan. July 16th - Ravenna Park Work Pary

Come volunteer with Bulldog!

In April we did a work party at the Arboretum.

It's July, and we will be just up the street at Ravenna Park.

A few years back, a community group mobilized to restore Ravenna Park. At the time, there was talk of routing storm runoff from Green Lake through Ravenna Creek, and the ivy was taking over, driving out native plants and strangling the trees. A lot of work has been done, but there is still plenty to do.

If you were listening to NPR this morning, you might have hear the relevant interview with Justin Martin on Frederick Law Olmstead and the Genius of Place. I hope to post more on the origins of Ravenna Park later on this week, so stay tuned.

Or you can read politics and history! TIME has its 10th Annual History Issue, asking Does It Still Matter? (The Constitution in constant crisis since 1787). UTNE asks, Patriot Acts, What does it mean to love your country?

Paris Review is always a winner with people who come in to Bulldog, and this issue has several fun writers.

Once a wild young man of science fiction, now a venerable figure who is openly scatological, Samuel R Delany is interviewed on the Art of Fiction along with William Gibson. Jonathan Lethem writes a short story, and there is poetry too. I'm hoping that there will still be a copy left when I get back from the 4th!

Twice a Year Hobo

Twice a year, our neighbors up north in Vancouver put out the awesome HOBO

It wanders between our photography and our pop culture sections.

It does have text and poetry, a number of interviews, photos of Michelle Williams, what Hobo calls a "portfolio" of photographic self-portraits, several photo/fashion essays, Justine Kurland's personal history photos of her road trips as a photographer and mother.

It is a brown issue, Dogimont's color fashion are outdoors brown, Tyler Udall's are simply brown and white. Hobo has the classical art view of the human body, so the magazine is not afraid of full nudity.

A new quarterly concern from McSweeneys, ongoing collaboration for the travel foodie among us. Created by NY Momofuku's David Chang and Peter Meehen. Each issue will focus on a theme, issue 2 will be "The Sweet Spot", but this first issue is RAMEN.

Highlights are Anthony Bourdain discussing David Chang's career in terms of such classic food movies as Ramen Girl and Tampopo. I haven't seen Ramen Girl, but Tampopo,by the late Juzo Itami, is a must see. (A few hints, "noodle western", truck driver ramen master, a virtuous but hapless ramen stand owner, a yakuza and his food mistress.)

And of course, Lucky Peach has recipes galore.

Wolves, the Grand Canyon, and Chuckanut Drive

We still have copies of the recent issue of High Country News, the delisting of the Gray Wolf. KUOW covered it just this week.

Idaho is very worried about wolves, reports Betsy Marston.

Or you can check out the newest issue. Along with the main article on Las Vegas flight tours over the Grand Canyon there is a low key article on the important topic of news reporting. With all the world of blogging and the folding and diminishing of the metropolitan newspapers, fewer reporters are in DC keeping an eye on western issues.

The bulk of federal land is in the west, and in some states, more than half the state is federal land. Here in King county we are so urban that we don't pay much attention to the public lands, but just step a little outside of the urban corridor, and you quickly run into the contentious politics of private vs public land. Just go a little north, and check out the state trust lands on the way to Bellingham.

Summer comes around, and many places come out with lists of "Summer Reading", easy stuff to read at the beach. Or you can be like me and some friends of mine, summer is when you have time to sink your teeth into something more demanding. I rather like Latin or Greek authors for the summer or geology (don't tell! but sometimes I have a little trouble keeping up with magazines that zip by ephemerally and not on a geologic time scale.)

So here are a few recent arrivals in the literary / ideas section. Granta does the "F" word*, Prairie Schooner, A Public Space, Chicago Review, Raritan (Conservatism and Counterrevolution, I F Stone an Enemy of the State), and then the standby, McSweeney's Believer. Paris Review should be in very soon.

U-District Street Fair is this Weekend

U District Street Fair 2010

Last Street Fair was a lot of fun, the sun came out, a guitar player was singing in front, spontaneously a passing oboist joined in, and Bulldog's baristas sang too!

If you haven't been by lately, we still have plenty of magazines. Magazines come and go, but there are always new ones showing up optimistically in search of an audience.

Our cafe now has small tables with chairs, a pleasant respite with pastry and your espresso drink or fresh squeezed lemonade. We have yummy sandwiches from Molly's and Equal Exchange has just added a new chocolate bar to our line up, the sea salt caramel. And if you just want a little chocolate, there are always the cute little 25cent chocolate bites.

Gloria has ordered more t-shirts, so we should have a fresh batch of spring colors in, and she has a lovely selection of cards, many by local artists and photographers.

As expected, Carson arrived. You can find it in our pop culture section, near film, music and computing.

Meanwhile, nearby in Architecture and Design, we have had a number of fun arrivals.

Domus! Nicer cover than the last few, very attractive. Although a clever idea, I thought that the last several "face" covers were not very inviting, and did not hint at the intriguing interiors. For instance, just where was that one house, was it Italy? And how near are the neighbors? Were they scandalized, or did they think it was just good fun?

Yes, it is coming.

Issue two should be in this week. You will be able to buy it at Bulldog. We don't know what day it is coming in, so if you must! have it, give us a call (206 632 6397) or an email and we will hold a copy for you.

And if you haven't heard about it, plans are for the magazine to be bi-monthly, for each issue to focus on a theme but to approach the theme via a mix ofdesign, fine art, illustration, photography and writing.

L'Officiel came in, I didn't notice at first, but I was finding a spot for a stack of new fashion magazines and I noticed Beyoncé is on cover. And if you look inside there is quite the eye-catching photo shoot of her inside, African influenced fashions including a design by her mother. I said Wow! the cover says Wow, and John H said Wow!

(You can also see in the photo three of the L'Officiel 1000 Models semi-annual magazines, pricier but with all photos, only or two ads, and minimal text. )

Back to Beyoncé! The photo spread has generated some controversy, as in some photos Beyoncé's face has been darkened. Perhaps I should have chosen one of the controversial photos, or perhaps you will have to hurry in and buy or browse your own copy of the magazine.

New to us is the Hedgehog Review subtitled as Critical Reflections on Contemporary Culture. The topic of the issue is The Shifting Experience of Self. Moodiness, pastiche, and intraindivisualism. We think it looks like an interesting read.

Then our classic, Philosophy Now -- David Hume's 300th Birthday. I will have to find out why they are calling him Demolition Dave.

The May 2011 Sunset magazine is on the shelf for sale, and the beautiful peaceful tent on the cover caught my eye, and then I discovered that they were right nearby. Another fantasy vacation?

With summer almost here, and the prospect for warmer, sunnier weather for those that like that sort of thing, travel is on the mind. And this Sunset has some fun travel leads for the western traveler. A day trip to the Dalles, 26 Wilderness Adventures (from luxury tent camping, cattle wrangling, stargazing at an Oregon beach or Utah's Red Rock country, glaciers, historic trails...), or for the urbanite, shopping in San Diego, Denver, or Santa Fe.

Or you could pick up American Road and get tons of tips on road trips for dino lovers. You get the La Brea Tar Pits, a Route 66 (the classic!) oil tour, and the Dinosaur Diamond, a National Scenic Byway. What, a book? People were confused when To Market To Market showed up, but so many of you have told us about Nikki McClure's books. We have her cards, her calendars (not till next fall!), so why not her book about farmers markets?

It's spring, the year round U-District Farmers Market is livening up as the sun starts peeking out, and To Market To Market seemed like just the thing you need sitting on your shelf next to your Maritime NW Gardening Guide from Tilth or the latest issue of Edible Seattle.

I grew up with Robert McCloskey's books, One Morning in Maine, Make Way for Ducklings, Time of Wonder, and of course Blueberries for Sal. Maybe "To Market To Market" is the book for the modern Northwest child.

Cafe: New from Molly's!

Now I have really enjoyed the new Molly's Sandwich, Slawsome! ("This sandwich is freaking rad. It's got tender perfectly pulled BBQ pork, and a burly helping of tangy, green cabbage slaw to give it some savage flavor") and I can tell you that I tried it because while I'm not a big BBQ fan, DM is. The slaw was fresh and tangy, just like slaw should be, not sad and slimy, and the bbq was delightful. We both loved it, but we made the mistake of eating it at home in front of the Dog and the Cats. Boss Cat and Big Dog jockeyed for prime begging position, keeping a sharp eye on each other, while keeping melting eyes and maximum cuteness expressions towards the Humans. Even Wary of the Dog Cat came out and made sure that we knew that she also thought the Slawsome smelled Awesome.

Alas, Slawsome is no more, but luckily, Molly's is introducing something new (which is one of the nice things about them, something tried and true, something new and potentially delightful), the Chicken Curry Wrap.

It is always an exciting day when the new MONOCLE comes in (The Great Global Rethink Issue: From nation to shop to home), but the new Superheroes issue of Colors also came in.

I was expecting the Colors#80, Superheroes issue (international to local heroes) to be more photographic in its presentation, but with this issue Colors jumped into the comic book / graphic novel style. Well worth looking at! And while I really liked the idea of the Collectors issue, this one is more likely to find a place on my shelf. Because whether your favorite is Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Wonderwoman, or Sandman, there is a superhero story for everyone.

And Monocle? I can't wait to get back to work to check out the story on the independent bookseller challenging the internet giants. You might be more interested in local coffee shops in the UK, or the Swiss bike maker for the urban rider. And then there is that fantasy trip to Barcelona.

While you might not notice it from the cover, you need to check out inside Vanity Fair, looking past Rob Lowe on display, Paul Allen on Bill Gates, palace insiders on the Royal Wedding, Goldman Sachs, and then the article about Rob Lowe and the boys of the Insiders....deep inside you will find a Joseph Stiglitz's column on the increasing income disparity. Truthdig calls him the Truthdigger of the week for this article, but directorblue wrote a rather heated opposition piece using the word schmuck (among others) and suggesting that since he directorblue had read the Stiglitz column and disliked it, you don't need to. Fun Magazines You May Have Missed

Sometimes there is a whole section of magazines that you have always missed somehow. Or maybe you just didn't expect it.

Dirt Rag #154, while having the expected articles of Where to Ride in New Zealand, also writes about access in Colorado, the relationship between bike trails, wilderness, and the roadless rule. Even though it was right on the cover, I almost missed one called "America's First Mountain Bikers". You may have heard about the 10th Cavalry regiment, but I was completely unfamiliar with the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps, a unit African-American soldiers based in Missoula who did a demonstration bike ride in 1897 from Missoula to St Louis, Missouri. (Further reading here and here)

Or you can find Prehistoric Times in our science and natural history section. A fun mix of paleontology, museum info, toys, art and models. This issue has James Gurney (Dinotopia), and article about the Chicago Field Museum, and Top Paleo Events of 2010.

And if you are looking for something more hip, there is the oversize The Last Magazine (pop culture). The sixth issue, in its own non-standard format.

New for Spring, zine Put a Egg On It #3 an "art and literary magazine out of New York City about food, cooking and the communal joys of eating with friends and family" Matthew & Jean both recommend checking it out! You can find it in the zine section near the Inner Swine and the First Line.

Also, the latest edition of The Maritime Northwest Garden Guide from Tilth. This Saturday March 19th is the early spring plant sale. The event is no longer at the Good Shepherd Center, but over at the Interbay Urban Center (Whole Foods). Tilth will also be having a workshop on city chickens.

Come by afterward and make us jealous with your new plants. You know that Gloria loves to talk about gardening!

Fab, Filament, Be Street, and Carl's Cars. You can find all three in Pop Culture. 15th Ave NE Construction - Cafe Hours Change

If you've come in on the weekend, you may have had your route changed by the construction on 15th Ave NE, if you haven't run into it already, 15th Ave NE is closed for construction Saturday and Sunday daytime until June! What a hassle, but that street really needed some smoothing out.

While the construction is going on, the espresso stand will be closed on the weekends.

We will have complementary drip coffee for our customers, and the two computers will still be available for you to drop in and check your email.

Spring - Cards, WSDOT, and the North Cascades

Spring is here, my mailbox says. I subscribe to WSDOT's news feed on the North Cascade Highway, and after months of silence, this showed up in my email. Even though it said snow! delays! The birds singing, the crocus blooming, the early daffodils.... There is no more certain sign of spring than talk of opening the mountain passes.

"Our Avalanche Control Team and the Twisp Maintenance Superintendent were planning to do the assessment of the North Cascades Highway on Tuesday and then it was postponed to Wednesday and now the trip is postponed until next week.
We've got mountain snow forecast through Thursday and the Avalanche crew can't be in two places at once, so they're going to have to stay at Stevens handling the avalanche control there for the rest of the week. (We did control work from 2 to 6 a.m. this morning and brought down a lot of snow, but there was a lot to bring down - We got 32" of new from 6 a.m. yesterday to 6 a.m. today.) You may also be aware, it's still snowing along the entire west slope of the Cascades - as I'm writing, Snoqualmie is still closed for avalanche control. (They've been getting more snow than Stevens today as the storm track is heavier to the south and coming in low - Snoqualmie is a 1,000' lower than Stevens, too).
When the assessment happens isn't that critical - as a matter of fact, the later it's done, the more accurately Mike and his snow wizards can make their predictions. The assessment trip is to determine how soon the clearing can begin and what resources (people and equipment) are going to be needed.
Oh, in answer to the question you didn't ask - it has been costing around $250,000 for the spring reopening effort. We are hoping we won't have to rent a lot of the big caterpillars (which WSDOT doesn't own) to keep the price down, but the reopening budget is secure. Despite the budget cutting the Governor and the legislature have done (are doing) - they all said no to any cuts to winter highway maintenance.
I'll let you know when the assessment trip is rescheduled and then what they found and what it means.

Urban Farm magazine settles on the very relevant topic of starting your seeds. It's a little chilly outside, but the seeds will like the warmth inside, unless the cats push the seedlings aside and appropriate the sunny warm spot.

Alas! I was linking to a website for this post, but the website is acting goofy this weekend, so you will just get a different version of the info.

Checking out Bicycle Benefits to order more stickers for you, noticed that they are looking for pictures of real people in real winter bicycling gear, ran across West Seattle blogger bikejuju who was highlighting photographs from the March 1963 Harper's Bazaar, showing two bicyclists watching a high fashion model prisoned in a floating bubble.

Harper's Bazaar is related to Harper's magazine. It was started by publishing house Harper & Brothers a few years later in 1867, a fashion magazine for the ladies. It has had a long and lively history including the famous pizazz years of Diana Vreeland. And now has many international sister publications. We have the UK and the Australian Harper's Bazaar (shown above) as well as the US edition.

While Harper's Bazaar may have used bicyclist to highlight spring couture, Bicycle Times is a young magazine, and rather like Good Old Boat (not about luxury yachts), Bicycle Times is a magazine about city transportation bicycling for the rest of us. And to circle around, has an article about winter bicycling gear.

High Country News, Solar Power, and Harper's

I usually skip over the High Country News quote of the week. I will have to start checking it out more often. I missed the quote at the turn of the year, U-District's Janine Blaeloch (Western Lands Project, just up the street), was quoted on big solar.

Currently, High Country News is looking for your stories about solar installation. Specifically "What sort of permits did you (or your installer) have to get to put solar panels or a wind turbine on your house? Was it difficult or easy? E-mail details, including your location, to editor@hcn.org"

This week the quote of the week (about nullification) led me to High Country News' discussion of the Tiny Little Laws article by Kathie Dobie in Harper's. It is a subscriber only article, but HCN calls the article well worth the price of the magazine. While Dobie's article focuses on the problems of prosecution of sexual violence on tribal lands (in one area the local hospital did not have rape kits available for several years), the Denver Post published an interesting and troubling series of articles a few years back. Women, children, and men fall between the cracks of different justice systems. Federal prosecutors become federal prosecutors because they want to do high profile sexy cases about terrorists, drug lords, and conspirators, not community domestic problems. And so what happens to a 7 year old girl 150 miles from the Spokane prosecutor's office gets pushed to the bottom of the pile, a 45 year old man beaten in a highway altercation is too far from Albuquerque for anyone to even interview.

I feel less frustrated reading this issue's cover article in High Country News -- Utah's Sagebrush Rebellion Capital Mellows, about Kanab. You may have heard about Kanab when they based the Natural Family Resolution, or because they are just up the road from Warren Jeff's Colorado City, or maybe just from their world famous animal shelter, Best Friends Sanctuary. John Wayne stayed there, so did Clint Eastwood, the Lone Ranger, and Rin Tin Tin. Kanab may have mellowed, but don't be surprised if you go down to the corner gas station with your old fashioned long hair, the guys hanging out might suggest that you need a haircut.

We still have copies of And Memoir. Bookmarks, Poets & Writers, Granta, African Voices, The Baffler, and Zoetrope Allstory are magazines you may have browsed or bought before. We have a new issue of Creative Nonfiction, and Boston Review has a new look.

So many of the new magazines come in and are a puzzle, is it fashion? Photography? Pop culture? Own is definitely men's fashion, Image is definitely photography (I am a sucker for those small format magazines), Vizor ended up in photography (although mostly pictures of women in clothes, it seemed more about the visuals than about clothes (but one could argue that about a significant amount of fashion photography)), Twin which seems a little more about the clothes is waiting hopefully for you with the other new arrivals at the front counter, and the Filament... is a little edgy and is in the catch all section of Pop Culture, somewhere near Gothic Beauty.

A couple of weeks ago, I opened my email and found my latest update from the Landscape Photography blog. (I stumbled across this blog while looking for information about one of my obsessions, and the blog has many accounts of travels by Philip Hyde in the time and area I am interested in. You are most likely to have run across Philip Hyde's work in classic Sierra Club publications such as Time and The River Flowing: Grand Canyon a rafting trip led by famed river runner Martin Litton in 1964 when the Bureau of Reclamation was planning on damming the Grand Canyon.)

Not too surprisingly, Color is a popular name for magazines. There is the Canadian magazine COLOR, a magazine founded by two Canadians (Vancouver) about skateboarders and their lifestyle. Then there is COLOR magazine, a multicultural magazine for professionals, with a focus on the New England - New York regions.

And then there is COLORS, a Benetton project, now on issue 79 Collectors, showing the expected to the not so expected. The next issue will be Superheroes (who are today's superheroes? Send ColorsLab your favorite stories, characters, pictures, and they may publish it.

McSweeney's Brain Box (#36)

McSweeney's Brain is here, otherwise known as McSweeney's #36. They have an awesome picture on their website, opened up and displayed invitingly at an urban curb. You can just come in and check out our open copy.

E.B. came in to pick up a newspaper, and thought that the box itself rather ugly, although admitting that the contents were cool. Barista Dan, however, thought that the box was awesome, and would happily take the box if you just want the contents. CR called it Groovy.

We still have two McSweeney's #35, but not for much longer.

The new Believer (Greil Marcus, Nick Hornby, Guy Maddin) is in, and we have a nice stack of Wholphin as well.

Arrivals this week - Lula

Lula, the long awaited has finally arrived. Originally hoped for in September, the shipping date changed several times, finally stories that UK subscribers had it in their hands and were excitedly displaying pictures of their very own copies on the internet, to the envy of those Lula-less.

DM stopped by last night and, struck by the cover opened it up to be impressed by the photography. Charlotte Gainsbourg on the cover, Kirsten Dunst inside, Rodarte (Black Swan) designs.
